A note about this course.

I’m going to be honest with you.
Learning is difficult.

CSS, like any skill, requires a lot of practice, layered with an understanding of many different conceptual frameworks. I’m not going to promise you that this course will give you easy shortcuts to mastering CSS, because I don’t think you can learn by taking shortcuts. I’m not going to sit here and tell you this is the very best, most life-changing course on the internet, because I think that only you can change your life, not any course.

But, here is what I can promise you: if you are eager to learn more about websites, how the internet works, and how to truly learn and apply CSS on a deep and practical level, then I will do my damndest to get you there. This course is my big, best effort (but not my last) toward my goal of helping people to learn more about websites, and develop a skillset that they can really use.

It’s a pretty thorough course, but I designed it to work for true beginners as well as novices. It’s best for people that are truly interested in learning CSS, and might be too much for someone just looking to learn a few quick tricks to customize their own websites (although those are in the course too).

My goal is that, if you finish this course, you’ll not only have a deep understanding of how websites and CSS work, but a working knowledge of how to write your own code and the ability to start customizing your own websites, and those of your clients, with CSS. I’ve incorporated training videos, practice areas, and visual elements to help you understand how everything works.

You may use what you learn in this course to grow your skillset, your own business, or maybe just to learn something that you’ve always been curious about. For a dedicated few of you, it’s my hope that you will be smarter than me when it comes to CSS, and maybe you’ll go on to work at Squarespace. It will have been an honor to be a part of your journey.

So, are you ready to get started with the most practical online course about learning CSS in Squarespace? It’s $99 today, and the price will probably increase as I pull this out of beta and add more lessons. But if money is an issue, get in touch and I’d be happy to work something out with you.

Keep Building,
Will

1. How Website’s Work

In this lesson, we learn the 3 different coding languages that make up every websites. Additionally, we learn a way to visually understand code.

2. Understanding HTML

We can’t learn CSS without understanding HTML. So we’ll dive into HTML and how it works. We answer questions like, "How do we write HTML?", "What is a div?", and "How do we create custom elements?".

3. The Web Inspector

In this lesson, we learn the basics of one of the most powerful and helpful tools in web design- The Web Inspector. How do we use it, how do we read it, and what are the most important aspects of it?

4. Understanding CSS

Now it’s time to start learning CSS. What is the syntax of CSS? Where are all the different places we can add code to Squarespace?

5. Targeting Things

Targeting elements in Squarespace can feel super complex and frustrating. In this lesson, we break down how to target anything on our website.

6. CSS Combinators

Sometimes targeting is too broad and we change elements on our site that we don’t mean to change. CSS Combinators are a way to help us get more specific with out CSS so that we target just the right element.

7. Formatting Part 1

Formatting Text, adding hover effects, changing the background color — these are all things we can edit with CSS. In this lesson, we learn some of the most-used properties in CSS, and then how to change these properties when we hover over something.

8. Layout Part 1

CSS Layout can confuse even the most advanced of Web Designers. In this lesson, I make it super simple to understand how the layout properties, like display & position, work in CSS. When we Apply It To Squarespace, we start to understand all of the really neat ways we can customize our summary blocks.

9. CSS Overrides

In this lesson, everything comes together. We learn how to make adjustments to ANY element on not only our Squarespace website, but ANY other website on any platform. We also take a deeper dive into the Web Inspector. This is an “Ah-Ha” moment kind of lesson.

10. Media Queries

Most websites today should be built as mobile-first, since most visitors are viewing websites on their mobile device. Media queries allow us to write CSS and then only apply it on mobile devices, so that we can take full control of the mobile experience.

11. Colors in CSS

In this lesson, I teach about some of the different color formats you can use with CSS (and the one best color format to use), as well as some best practices for adding colors tp borders and box-shadows. And then we take dip into CSS Variables and how I manage colors in the custom CSS area.

Lesson Outline

Hey look, it’s me!

Hey look, it’s me!

Hey there! 👋

My name is Will. I’ve been working in Squarespace for years and have become an expert in customizing elements within Squarespace through code.

My wife and I built a digital agency called OTIS — Online Things & Internet Stuff — a few years back, and since then we’ve built or contributed to over 100 websites.

I started my blog, will-myers.com, to share all of the coding knowledge that I had gained from this experience, since that is the part of building websites that I have found most people struggle with. Eventually, I realized a need for a more structured presentation for all of the information on the web about coding in CSS.

Today, code that I have written and shared is used on over 10,000 Squarespace websites, and my articles and video tutorials have helped thousands of people to build great websites.

This course is an effort to help even more people.

Keep Building,
Will
